Tips For A Successful Move

Advance Planning - #1 Priority

  • Interview movers and book a moving date as early as you can - especially in the busy spring and summer moving seasons. Most movers are booked a month or more in advance.
  • Start making your "to do" list at least a month before your move. You will find it takes more time to check off your list than you think!
  • Plan to have your phone disconnected the day after your move.
  • Note the 24 hour rule: Disconnect all electronic items, and clean the refrigerator with warm water and baking soda and dry it 24 hours before packing.
  • Weather: Be sure driveways and walkways are accessible and clear of snow and ice. The moving crews do not shovel. Using sand or salt is not recommended as they ruin your carpets. In mud season be sure hallways are covered with paper, pads, etc. to prevent tracking. In warm weather it would be appreciated if you have liquids available for the crew.
  • Plan items not to be shipped: We will not ship plants, flammable or combustible substances such as paint or propane, or perishable items.

Be At Your Home On Moving Day

  • Every move is unique and your movers will need guidance. If you are there to answer questions the move will go exactly as you want it.
  • Do not schedule flights, appointments, parties, etc. on a day that you are scheduled to be packed, loaded or delivered. It is very difficult to guarantee an exact finish time. Much less stressful!

Inventory

  • Be present to inventory your belongings both on and off the truck or designate an adult representative who is familiar with your goods.

Valuables

  • Do not ask packers to pack expensive items such as jewelry, sentimental things, medicines you take daily, checkbooks, credit cards, ATM cards, school and medical records, wills and living wills, deeds, birth certificates, etc. Personally handle those items and take them along with you.
  • Clearly mark items such as VCRs, camcorders, binoculars, sewing machines, cameras and other technical or electronic equipment. The crew will mark the carton and the inventory sheet and you should check them so you will know where to find them at delivery.
  • Discuss insurance with your estimator or moving consultant. Basic moving rates do not include insurance for lost or damaged goods. Zip lock bags are handy to make sure items such as screws, fittings, remote controls, garage door openers, etc. are not misplaced. Talk with your driver to ensure you both know where these have been packed.

End Of Move Details

  • Walk through entire house, checking cabinets and closets to be sure nothing is forgotten.
  • Payment: In most cases, as mandated by the Department of Transportation, payment must be made in the form of cash or certified check at the time of delivery before your shipment is unloaded. Arrangements must be made in advance for credit card payment or for your company to be billed directly.
  • Tipping: Many people ask about tipping crews. Tips are not required but most customers who feel they have received good service do tip the crews, and they certainly appreciate it. Please give the tip to the driver to disperse.
  • Always feel free to call: If you have any questions or concerns you should call the office. We have found that quick answers to questions save many worries later!
